After a rough 0-4 start to the season, the Lady Lions seem to be putting together the pieces. After this past week on the road, SLU volleyball returned home to the Pride Roofing University Center. On Thursday, September 26th, SLU swept Lamar University 3-0. Two days later, the Lady Lions beat the University of the Incarnate Word to clinch their tenth victory in a row, and it was a nail-biter. With a current record of 10-4, the Lady Lions aim for a Southland Conference Championship three-peat.

The Lady Lions kept their distance against Lamar, never really giving them a chance to take a lead. The UIW Cardinals, on the other hand, was formidable opponent. SLU beat the Cardinals in the first two sets relatively smoothly, but in the next two sets, UIW started to build some momentum, winning 25-23 and 25-22. The fifth and final set came down to the wire. There were several lead changes during this set, but Cicily Hidalgo scored a kill for the match's final point, securing a victory of 15-12. Hidalgo and Lexi Gonzales had standout performances in both of these games, leading their team to these wins.
Southeastern played very well in both of these games, and I had a great experience. Tickets are free for me and all other Southeastern Students so I can't complain about that. There are different events and promotions for each volleyball game at the University Center. For Thursday's game against Lamar, the first 200 students to arrive were given a free 3-finger combo from Canes. And I can tell you, the Canes did not last long. All attendees were given the opportunity to get their posters signed by the team after the game. Game promotions like these are carried out by the director of athletic marketing, George McLaughlin who I was able to chat with before the game. At every southeastern sporting event, there's a t-shirt throw. I wasn't able to catch a t-shirt, but hopefully I'll catch one next time.
Even though the Lady Lions are playing very good volleyball, they do not get the audience they deserve. If you haven’t yet, consider catching a game or following along with the season—there’s always something thrilling happening, and your support makes a difference! To buy tickets to the next event, visit the Southeastern Athletics website here. I know I will be there cheering on the Lady Lions to their third Southland Conference Championship three peat.
